What It Changes

Three things, in order of how much they matter. Dimensions first: a 4000 pixel photograph displayed in an 800 pixel column is wasting most of its bytes before any format question arises. Format second: WebP and AVIF are meaningfully smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality. Metadata third: camera data and colour profiles add weight nothing renders.

NOTE diagram.png kept as PNG. Text in images
      degrades under lossy compression.

The largest saving is the resize, not the format change. The hero image was a full-resolution photograph in a slot that never displayed it at that size, which is the single most common cause of a slow page and is invisible until someone measures it.

The kept PNG matters too. Screenshots and diagrams containing text look bad under lossy compression, and a tool that converts everything indiscriminately produces images that are smaller and unusable.

Questions

Is WebP supported everywhere?
In every current browser. AVIF is smaller and slightly less universal.

Will converting reduce quality?
Slightly and usually invisibly on photographs. Images containing text should stay lossless.

What does it cost?
It runs on credits, not a subscription, and credits never expire.

Convert a real batch from your own media library and compare the file sizes before you decide anything.
